Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (AUS/NZ WELI)

The Australian and New Zealand Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (AUS/NZ WELI) is dedicated to assisting women in anaesthesia with gaining skills, knowledge, confidence, and opportunities to achieve their career goals. 

A key component of this mission is to pair/partner participating women (the protégés) with a volunteer leader in the anaesthesia community. These leaders have a history of mentoring and personal career success, and they work more closely to assist protégés in their specific area of interest. We call these leaders WELI “advisors”, and they use aspects of both advising and mentoring when working with their WELI protégés. 

Additionally, advisors and protégés will participate in skills workshops led by executive advisors and will be provided other outside resources on achieving success in academic medicine.

WELI is coming to SPANZA 2023 and is eager to offer the following to those attending the conference:

Thursday WELI Workshop | Women’s Empowerment and Leadership initiative (AusNZWELI)

Overview: This 
workshop is designed specifically for potential AUS/NZ WELI protege and advisors, this introductory workshop will examine how to set meaningful goals, and the difference between mentoring, coaching and sponsorship, as well as introduce the GROW framework for participating in effective coaching conversations. This workshop is open to participants of any gender.

Friday WELI Breakfast | Women's Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (WELI) Networking Breakfast  

Date: Friday 27th October
Time: 0715 - 0815 
Overview: The breakfast will start with an intro to WELI, the why, the how and where WELI is up to right now, and then a very brief talk about the power of networking. Then it will transition to a networking opportunity, facilitated with ice breakers and conversation starters, and then every 5-10 minutes participants will move around the room so they can start again with a new group of people.  All are welcome.
