The following open forums will be held during the conference. These are open for all delegates to attend.
Research Forum
Chair: Brian Anderson
Speakers: Karin Becke, Nicola Disma, Thomas Engelhardt, Walid Habre, Martin Johr, Mark Thomas, Francis Veyckemans
There are many guidelines concerning how to conduct a research project, how to comply with ethical considerations, application for grants, and the clever use of statistics. However, the success conducting a research project or even establishing a national guideline may hinge on other factors that are rarely considered during planning. These might include co-researcher idiosyncrasies, personality clashes, compliance from other colleagues (e.g., nursing staff), sample or data storage facilities or processes, unforeseen costs or simply covariates never imagined. Our SPANZA meeting invited speakers will present some of these issues that have impacted on research projects they have worked on. The message of “expect the unexpected” will be contained in describing frustrations and amusing anecdotes setting up practice guidelines or major studies e.g., APA difficult intubation guidelines, German fluid protocols, Apricot and Nectarine. It will let participants know what they are in for when they volunteers for such committees or conducting research studies.
Pain Forum
Chair: A/Prof George Chalkiadis
Dr Mark Alcock: Why won’t the drugs work? An approach to the distressed child on the acute pain round.
Dr Jonathon de Lima: Persistent postsurgical pain in children and adolescents
A/Prof Greta Palmer: Analgesic update: practical tips and some evidence base as drawn from editing the Acute Pain Management Scientific Evidence 4th edition
Cardiac Forum
The Cardiac Forum will begin with a short presentation centred on local (WA) experience followed by an interactive question and answer session aimed at sharing expertise and knowledge. All are welcome, please email suggestions for discussion to Tanya.Farrell@health.wa.gov.au
