Mentorship & Clinical supervision

Date: 17/10/2019

Time/s: 1330 – 1530 then 1600 – 1800 (2 part workshops)

Cost: $200

Facilitator: Paul Bailey

This workshop will address the needs of senior paediatric anaesthetists who take on the complex and emotionally demanding role of guiding and supervising trainees. At the heart of this training contract, there is a paradox: trainees seek supervision in order to hone their talent for the benefit of others. Yet, they soon become aware that by allowing a supervisor to shine a light on their own blind spots, their areas of vulnerability and of their not knowing, in the very doing of this, they come so close to shaming themselves or being shamed. Supervising requires skill and a particular sort of person to do this well, especially so since we live in a wider culture in which there is such a close link between shining and shaming. How can we reassure supervisees, as Leonard Cohen sang, to ‘forget your perfect offering; there is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in’.

In this workshop, we will be actively using the practice of clinical supervision, including the process of supervision of supervision, to assist you to engage more effectively in the professional supervision and/or mentoring you offer to those in training.
