EPIC IS NOW FULLY BOOKED!

EPIC is the SPANZA Forum (special interest group) for SPANZA Members with an interest in reducing peri-procedural anxiety and distress. We commenced in 2018 and have been busy setting up a sub-committee, developing the Brisbane EPIC course and strategies to give EPIC members the skills to run 1/2 day courses in the future.

EPIC is an acronym for Effective Peri-Procedural Communication, which emphasises our aims to provide easily used simple techniques for every child, every time they have a medical procedure.

The secondary aim of EPIC is to teach the communication skills and techniques to SPANZA members and other Paediatric specialities that care for children having procedures, so they can manage every child including those with behavioural problems or developmental delays. Our third aim is that EPIC members develop the skills to teach these techniques at courses in their own health care settings.

As part of the SPANZA ASM we are running the EPIC one day course and Paediatric Hypnosis Masterclasses which are open to all ASM registrants.

In addition we are running a “Train The Trainer” session for the SPANZA Epic forum members prior to the EPIC Course where we will learn more about teaching the skills and how to run courses in your own health care settings.

Following the Brisbane EPIC course we plan to provide further training in hypnotic skills by bringing the US National Paediatric Hypnosis Training Institute to Australia in early 2020. That is currently under negotiation and we hope to lock that in soon. We also aim to start providing 1/2 day EPIC courses in 2020 with courses preceded by on-line learning and the course comprising 3 workshops.

EPIC is actively developing an on-line presence within the SPANZA Forums including reference material, a chat site to discuss specific problems and links to other organisations such as POEMS and NPHTI.

We encourage every SPANZA Member to join the EPIC Forum and join us in learning, teaching and developing skills for caring for children having medical procedures.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The EPIC one-day workshop is a single day,  with informative background lectures in the morning and small group workshops in the afternoon to develop your skills.

The EPIC workshop is aimed at all health care professionals who provide procedural care for children and adolescents. Including Anaesthetists, Anaesthetic Assistants,  Surgeons, Procedural and Ward Nursing staff, Occupational Therapists and Play Therapists.

Attendees should be interested in gaining information and skills to understand the importance of preventing and managing procedural anxiety.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

The morning lectures will cover:

Lecture 1: Background into the aetiology and prevalence of procedural anxiety

Presenter: Phil Cunnington

Lecture 2: “Little words BIG impact”

Presenter: Allan Cyna

Communicating with children is both fascinating and mysterious.  At its heart, it is the means of expressing how children perceive and influence the world around them. Although traditionally considered to be a way to exchange information and meaning, it is also a way to connect with others.  It can inform, terrify, hurt and soothe.  Intuitive skills are usually gained through many years of experience in paediatric anaesthesia, rather than developing a structure of specific skills. Learnable frameworks have been developed such as: LAURS (Listening; Acceptance; Utilisation; Reframing and Suggestion). The LAURS concept emphasizes the use of reflective listening.

Lecture 3: Introduction into simple hypnotic techniques for procedural care

Presenter: Jody Thomas

The afternoon workshops will cover:

Small group sessions rotating through three workshops covering the following topics.

Workshop 1: Simple hypnotic techniques for procedural care

Facilitator: Jody Thomas

Practical application of concepts covered in the lecture.

Workshop 2: Communication Skills – How to make talking with kids, child's play: Living the dream!

Facilitator: Allan Cyna

The things we say and do can be part of the problem or part of the solution.  This workshop is for anyone who works with children and wishes to hone their hypnotic communication skills.  The GREAT LAURS of hypnotic communication provides a practical framework to facilitate the practice, teaching and research of communication skills with children. This workshop aims to provide a hands-on approach for participants to practice communication techniques with children.

Intended learning outcomes

1. To be able to demonstrate different approaches likely to be effective when interacting with children.

2. To be able to explore common applications of these skills in anaesthesia practice.

3. To learn, teach and demonstrate effective non-pharmacological interventions that can be safely used with children.

Workshop 3: The Challenging Patient

Facilitators: Alex Donaldson and Rowan Ousley

Case based discussions including patients with extreme procedural anxiety, Asperger’s Syndrome and ASD. Covering topics such as individual procedural planning, optimisation of the procedural environment and consideration of pharmacological techniques.
