Kidney Supportive Care (KSC) is an alliance between Nephrology and Palliative Medicine to provide holistic care for all patients with kidney failure, whether or not they are receiving Kidney Replacement Therapy (KRT) (dialysis or transplantation). This is a rapidly evolving and expanding sub-discipline with growing input from the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). Working closely with Nephrology, the role of Palliative Medicine includes communication skills, symptom assessment and management, advance care planning and care of the deteriorating and dying patient. This Update will present the most recent evidence and developments in this field.

Good communication is an essential skill in palliative medicine but many of us have never had any formal communication skills training. Research shows that communication skills can be taught and better communication has multiple benefits both for our patients and ourselves. In this interactive half – day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills in a safe space with trained facilitators. This workshop is taught using the VitalTalk method and is modelled on the highly – regarded AChPM Communication Skills Workshops.
Respiratory Palliative Care – Improving care in advanced respiratory disease Workshop

This workshop, hosted by the Respiratory Palliative Care Special Interest Group focuses on the latest evidence from research in the field of the interface of palliative care and advanced non-malignant respiratory disease. Topics covered will include: innovative models of care; symptom relief; and enhanced understanding of patient and family experience and need. In addition, opportunities will be explored for future collaborative research areas.All members and non-members welcome.
AIDA Workshop - Cultural Safety Training: The Clinical Application of Cultural Safety

What AIDA offer is unique with our program aimed at the clinical application of cultural safety, developed by Indigenous doctors and delivered by Indigenous doctors. This compelling training helps participants to extend their knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthcare experiences, explore how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions and behaviours in a clinical setting, and discuss ways to be more culturally safe.
