Michael Ashby is a Consultant Physician in Palliative Care and Pain Medicine, and presently Acting Co-Clinical Director of the Medical and Cancer Services Stream in the Tasmanian Health Service (THS), based at the Royal Hobart Hospital. After graduation in London, and training in clinical oncology in the UK and France, he has held clinical, academic, management and leadership positions in palliative care in Adelaide and Melbourne prior to moving to Hobart in 2007.
He is a member of the International Working Group on Death Dying and Bereavement (IWG), and former Vice-President, director and board member of Grief Australia. He is an associate member of Group Relations Australia, and attended the 2015 Tavistock Leicester Conference.
He has interests in law, ethics and the humanities as they apply to palliative care and decision-making at the end of life, and has been working on the interface between psychodynamics and death and dying, grief and loss. He has extensive experience of mediation, supervision and open disclosure techniques in health, safety and quality contexts.
