Thomas W. LeBlanc, MD, MA, MHS, FAAHPM, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematologic Malignancies and Cellular Therapy at the Duke University School of Medicine, and Director of the Cancer Patient Experience Research Program (CPEP) in the Duke Cancer Institute. He is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hospice and palliative medicine, and his clinical practice focuses on the care of patients with blood cancers, specifically myeloid malignancies. Dr. LeBlanc’s program of research focuses on palliative care issues in hematology and aims to improve our understanding of patients’ experiences receiving cancer treatment, particularly regarding symptom burden, quality of life, distress, prognostic understanding, and decision-making. Much of his work focuses on the patient experience, using electronic patient-reported outcome measures to better understand targets for improvement in clinical practice, and to inform the development and testing of novel interventions. He has received a Junior Career Development Award from the National Palliative Care Research Center, a Sojourns Scholar Leadership Award from the Cambia Foundation, a Mentored Research Scholar Grant from the American Cancer Society and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Tom is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and is actively involved in the national dialogue about palliative care for patients with blood cancers.
