Problem Based Learning (PBL) Sessions

From 1400 - 1730 on Saturday, there will be numerous concurrent PBL's occurring at Noah's on the Beach for delegates. Each session will be 60 minutes, with some sessions being repeated to allow delegates to attend most sessions. To view the exact timings of each of the PBL's below, please refer to the program tab.

The pregnant trauma patient
Facilitators: Dr Tom Walker & Dr Brad Sheridan
Discussion of key concepts and considerations in the management of the pregnant patient requiring emergency care and surgery.

Lung Ultrasound
Facilitator: Dr Sam Vidler and Dr Sam Phillips
Ready to upgrade from the 100+ year old stethoscope to a 2020s Point of Care Ultrasound for that crashing patient in your anaesthetic care? Learn some of the diagnostic skills (pneumothorax, interstitial oedema, pleural fluid) and options for monitoring therapy within lung ultrasound.

Planning a meaningful audit/Practical Research session
Facilitator: Dr Rebecca Scott
Targeted at anaesthetic trainees and those new to the audit process, this session is designed to demystify the scholar role activity, and provide a framework for clinical audit as a tool for continuous quality improvement.

To TEG or not to TEG, that is the question 
Facilitator: Dr Ben Piper
Tired of not knowing why your patient is bleeding? Is apportioning blame to the surgeon not getting you the results you need? Is throwing all blood products indiscriminately based on 50 year old empiric n=12 adults data not doing it for you anymore? Thoracics for the occasional anaesthetist

Hot air debrief: Critical Incident debriefing 
Facilitators: Dr Claire Wohlfahrt, Roslyn Sklavos & Annika Schryver
In all medical specialties there are moments of stress or trauma that require a response. How we respond in these times of need can make an immense difference in the way we process and build upon these experiences. The Acute Incident Response (AIR) program provides usable tools that can support anyone wishing to refine their responses to traumatic events in the workplace. This session will discuss the theory and practical application of the tools from a variety of clinical backgrounds.

Regional Analgesia Techniques in Trauma – Reducing Reliance on the PCA Workshop 

Facilitator: Dr Mark Davies, Dr Tim Webb & Dr Vivian Ho
Fee: $150 per person to cover additional costs associated with the workshop. Registrations for the workshop will be taken during the conference registration process. 

The focus of this hands-on workshop will be on regional anaesthesia techniques for truncal and limb trauma. We will cover essential blocks including chest wall blocks, brachial plexus, fascia iliaca and popliteal sciatic blocks. Single shot and catheter techniques will be discussed. Additional blocks will be shown on request to meet participants' specific learning needs. Limited places available to ensure individualised guidance.
