PAST TRAINEE SHOWCASES

2024: 10th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

The 10th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held at the Newcastle Club, on 30 October 2024.  Seven trainees presented their research. The judges were Dr Chris Levi, Dr LiZsa Ta and Dr Chris Vedeler.  The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Malavika Panda for her research paper titled ‘Knowledge, perception and barriers of lung ultrasound among paediatric clinicians in children with acute respiratory distress: a qualitative study.'




2023: 9th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

The 9th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held at the Newcastle Club, on 18 October 2023.  Six trainees presented their research. The judges were Dr Rob Smith, Prof Carolyn Hullick and Dr Kahn Preece. The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Niall Johnston for his research paper titled ‘A ten-year retrospective case series of children with acute bone and joint infection at John Hunter Children's Hospital'

2022: 8th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

The 8th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held at the Newcastle Club, on 2nd November 2022.  Five trainees presented their research. The judges were Prof. Patricia Crock, Dr Elizabeth Hesketh and Prof. Jennifer Martin. The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Chris Lawrence for his research paper titled ‘Factors associated with disordered eating in adolescents with type 1 diabetes'


2021: 7th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

The 7th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held, for the second time at the Newcastle Club, on 17th November 2021.  With some Covid-19 restrictions in place, eight trainees presented their research. The judges were Prof. Joerg Mattes, A/Prof Aniruddh Deshpande and Dr Murray Webber. The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Heidi Goldsmith for her research paper titled ‘Has the addition of Lung Clearance Index testing in young children affected outcomes and management in cystic fibrosis patients?'

2020: 6th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

The 6th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held, for the first time at the Newcastle Club, on 21st October 2020.  With Covid-19 restrictions in place, five trainees presented their research in Invasive pneumococcal disease, prolonged QT syndrome,  neonatal sepsis and Diabetic Ketoacidosis. The judges were Dr L. Roddick, Dr B. Ross and Prof. P Walker. The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Lucinda Marks for her research paper titled ‘Time to positive blood culture in early onset neonatal sepsis; a retrospective clinical study and review of the literature’.

2019:  5th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

On the 24th October 2019, the 5th HPS Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held at Noah’s on the Beach. Seven trainees presented their research in Insulin Dependent Diabetes, Gastrointestinal Disease, Urology and Growth documentation. The judges were Prof. Davidson, Dr Scott Nightingale and Dr Jodi Hilton. The Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr Alison Freeth for her research paper titled “Rates and trends of prescribing acid suppression medication in children: analysis of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme data 2003-2017”.

2018:  4th TRAINEE SHOWCASE

A regular event at John Hunter Children’s Hospital the 4th Hunter Paediatric Trainee Showcase was held on 31st October 2018. Nine trainees presented their work on Diabetes, anaphylaxis, medication allergy, incontinence, obesity, substance abuse and child protection in front of 70 attendees. The three judges Dr Bruce Whitehead, Dr Matt Edwards and Dr Rebecca Glover awarded the Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research to Dr Hilary Cahill for her work on “Adolescents with substance use problems in our area: A retrospective review”.

2017:   3rd TRAINEE SHOWCASE

This event is a platform for junior medical staff to present their research in front of their peers. On 25th October 2017, 7 trainees presented their research to an audience of 70 paediatric clinicians. They presented on sepsis, food allergy, diabetes, asthma, child protection and Kawasaki’s disease. Three senior staff members which included Dr Don Anderson, Dr Keith Howard and Dr Paul Craven judged the event. The inaugural Peter Ebeling Award for Excellence in Junior Paediatric Research was awarded to Dr James Mulvany for his work titled “Does radionuclide bone scintigraphy add value to skeletal survey in the diagnosis of abusive fractures in children?”.

2016:  2nd TRAINEE SHOWCASE

Following on from the success of the first event the 2nd HPS Trainee Showcase was held on 26th October 2016. Eleven trainees presented their work. Dr Wilkinson, Prof. Vimpani and Dr J Adamson judged the event. Dr Vanessa Cairns who presented her work on Coeliac Disease was awarded the first prize.

2015:  1st TRAINEE SHOWCASE

On 28th October 2015, Hunter Paediatric Society organised a meeting at The Crowne Plaza where 5 paediatric trainees presented their research. Thirty five consultants and paediatric trainees attended the meeting. The meeting was a great success and well received.
