PROBLEM BASED LEARNING SESSIONS

Saturday from 1:00pm.

Three 60 minute problem based workshops will be offered on Saturday afternoon at the conference venue.  Each will be repeated so delegates have the opportunity to attend all 3.

Pain PBL

Facilitator: Rob Thomas

Pain Medicine and lessons from the grave.

Pain medicine is sometimes the millstone around an anaesthetist’s neck.  Often, it can be seen as mindless, protocol driven pain rounds where pain scores are recorded and PCAs are withdrawn.

Sometimes, things go wrong and the ‘difficult patient’ may become the ‘medico-legal nightmare’.  What are our professional responsibilities in these situations? What is our duty of care and what can we learn from previous cases?  Join us for a session of hypotheticals that will test your knowledge and communication skills in difficult situations.

Obstetrics PBL

Facilitator: Rob Marr

A summary of obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia for anaesthetists who occasionally cover maternity sessions. It includes how to choose and run your anaesthetic, tips on performing regional anaesthesia, management of the obstetric airway and a questions and answer session.

Research PBL

Facilitators: Andrew Udy & Dave Sturgess

This small group session builds on concepts introduced earlier in the conference’s lecture series.  The primary intention will be to set down stepping stones to guide new-to-research clinicians beyond inspiration. In the available time, topics will be drawn from the well-trodden path to peer reviewed publication. This journey typically includes; appreciation of the existing literature, study protocol development, feasibility and funding, ethics and research governance approval, screening and enrolment, data collection and management, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation.  The session is ideally suited to clinicians hoping to develop a research question, from hypothesis generation to data presentation.  A limited amount of pre-reading will be provided.

OFFSITE WORKSHOPS

Saturday from 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Regional Anaesthesia Ultrasound Workshop

Facilitators: Mark Davies & Adrian Chin

An ultrasound for regional anaesthesia workshop will be held at The Royal Newcastle Centre level 2 on Saturday afternoon. The workshop will comprise three workstations with two topics each. Stations will last 45 minutes each. Afternoon tea will be provided.

Workshop topics include:

Neuraxial ultrasound - why not?
Seeing in a snowstorm
The fascia iliacus – a hippy thing
The paravertebral space – comfortably numb
The interscalene groove – an oldie but a goodie
The adductor canal – while you’re down there
Opportunity will be provided for tuition in other regional anaesthesia techniques by request if time permits.

Registration will be limited to four registrants per station with a maximum number of twelve registrants for the workshop. Places will be available on a first-come-first-served basis.

A fee of $120 per person will cover additional costs associated with the workshop.

Echo Workshop

Facilitators: Martina Zib & Paul Healey

The Echo workshop is designed for the novice and occasional handler of the Echo probe. The  will involve hands-on echocardiography, use of the Heartworks echocardiography simulator and review of pathology.

The team are passionate about the role of echocardiography in critical care, and are experienced echocardiography educators. The small groups allow the time and practice that can be difficult to find in our busy daily practice!

A fee of $120 per person will cover additional costs associated with the workshop. Minimum and maximum numbers apply.
