OPTIONAL SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOPS

Practical hypnosis and communication
Facilitator: Allan Cyna
Cost: $150
Children live in a hypnotic state of play and make-believe most of the time. This workshop aims to demonstrate how this aspect of their lives can be utilised by the paediatric anaesthetist to:
1. Smooth out a gas induction,
2. Facilitate IV cannulation in an awake child
3. Reduce the need for pharmacological premedication and
4. Promote patient comfort and safety both preoperatively and postoperatively.
Many paediatric anaesthetists use hypnotic techniques and subconscious communications often without fully appreciating fully what they do to achieve the patient’s cooperation or the language structures underlying this learnable and teachable skill.

This workshop aims to demonstrate how paediatric anaesthetists can discover how children can anaesthetise body parts without pharmacological anaesthesia and how to learn and teach self-hypnosis to older children and adolescents.

The workshop will include hot topics in placebo and nocebo research, Awake suggestions suitable for clinical paediatric practice, brief hypnosis techniques for managing pain, needle phobia and as the sole anaesthetic or as an anaesthetic adjunct for minor surgery.

By the end of this workshop participants will appreciate how to:
- Avoid inadvertent negative suggestions and their adverse consequences.
- Experience and teach “believed in imagination”, “the steeple technique” - a rapid 3-minute self-hypnosis.

Advanced techniques will also be demonstrated including how to use the Switch wire imagery technique for rapid hypnotic anaesthesia in the under 10s.

Management of the bleeding child
Facilitators:
Bernhard Ziegler & Susan Goobie
Cost: $100
Our invited world renown experts in the management of blood loss during major paediatric surgeries, Susan Goobie and Bernhard Ziegler will be involved in this workshop.  Case based scenarios will be used to explore the assessment and management of major blood loss in children. The clinical use and interpretation of point care testing (ROTEM) will be an important part of the workshop.  This workshop runs just after the lecture session on paediatric transfusion topics to allow more detailed exploration of blood loss in children beyond that presented in the lectures. As well as being an excellent opportunity to discuss this topic with engaging experts, please note that participants in the ANZCA CPD program, may claim this major haemorrhage course as an emergency response activity in their CPD portfolio. Recognition code: ER-MH-012

Management of the difficult paediatric airway
Facilitators: Paul Baker, Yasmin Endlich, Greg Houghton, Paul Stricker, Todd Maddock, Fiona Taverner & Kris Usher

This is a mainly hands-on workshop, teaching the management of predicted and un-predicted difficult airways in paediatric patients. International and national experts will share their experiences, teach how to use advanced airway equipment including flexible and rigid fiberscopes in a variety of different scenarios, assess the airway with the ultrasound and much more.  An opportunity not to be missed by advanced and novice paediatric anaesthetists.

Anaesthesia in children with neuromuscular disorders and malignant hyperthermia
Facilitator: Catherine Olweny
Coordinator: Andrew Wallace
Cost: $60
This interactive workshop will consider the anaesthetic implications in the management of children with neuromuscular disorders through some interesting and challenging case based discussions. It will explore how to approach the preoperative assessment and the subsequent anaesthetic management of these children for a range of surgical procedures. It will also review the perioperative management of malignant hyperthermia susceptible patients undergoing diagnostic procedures.

Paediatric life support
Facilitator: Cath Powell
Cost: $150
This hands-on multi-station workshop will explore cardiac arrest in children using simulation. The facilitators are paediatric anaesthetists with an interest in simulation, teaching and managing critical situations in anaesthesia. There will be pre-reading and some homework is required to get the most out of this workshop.  ANZCA CPD Emergency Response Code:ER-15-CA-022.

Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia for paediatric anaesthetists
Facilitator: Faith Crichton, Greg  Houghton, Vasanth Rao, Kaushik Saha, Andrew Wallace & Nicole Wylie
Coordinator: Yasmin Endlich
Cost: $150
This workshop is designed for paediatric anaesthetists to understand the anatomic basics of ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia and its application in children. The workshop will provide tips and tricks useful from novice to advanced ultrasound users.  International and national experts in the field will share their knowledge, tips and tricks to perform up-to-date ultrasound guided blocks for paediatric patients. The use of real time ultrasound assessment of the spine, trunk and core blocks inclusive to new block techniques will be discussed and demonstrated.  Lots of hands on practice!

The theatre of magic
Facilitator:
Andrew Ormandy
Coordinator: Rowan Ousley
Cost: $80
The power of magic is captivating and enchanting for children of all ages and quite often what appears complex is in fact very simple……it is all in the performance!

Humour, distraction, sleight of hand and misdirection are skills that allow magicians to perform illusions and tricks that baffle, amaze and entertain their audiences. This workshop has been specifically designed for paediatric anaesthetists to introduce magic as a ‘calming tool’ for patients preparing for theatre. Join Adelaide’s funniest clown magician ‘Bumbles the Clown’ for an entertaining hands-on magic master class that will introduce simple techniques and tricks that can be applied in an operating environment. Learn how to make a bright light jump from hand to hand, how to do the ‘paddle move’, make a silk disappear and have a laugh with the break-away wand along with other tips.

A ‘magic kit’ will be available for purchase for participants in the workshop to put learnings into practice ready for their first performance.

Warning: once you enter the world of a magician it will become addictive!

Come along and be vigorously challenged to think about how you give an anaesthetic under the watchful eye of a cerebral oximeter.
