'Young Adult' fiction is a label beloved of booksellers and publishers but what does the term exactly mean? And should an arbitrary definition exist when books featuring teenager protagonists can appeal to readers of all ages? Sophie Masson discusses whether there are any differences in writing historical novels for children, teenagers and adults with Suzanne Leal, Lauren Keenan and Rebecca Lim, three authors who have successfully written for various age groups.
