Health Care Quality Improvement and Patient Safety: Wake Up Safe Workshop

This is a 3-hour intermediate to advanced level quality and safety workshop conducted by anesthesiologists from USA with expertise in quality improvement and safety analytics.  The workshop is designed to provide pediatric anesthesiologists and other clinicians an introduction to concepts like resilience engineering, using real time data to drive improvement, patient safety organization databases like Wake Up Safe. We will cover topics relevant for Quality improvement and safety analytics to improve outcomes in children having anesthesia for surgery and medical procedures. 

Learning Objectives: 
1) Evaluate the challenge of balancing efficiency and thoroughness to achieve high quality care and patient safety
2) Participants will understand the concepts of resilience engineering as an alternative or complement to traditional view of safety. How can safety systems transition from safety zero or one to safety two?
3) Provide the foundational concepts for using real time data to drive improvement projects 
4) Discuss the national patient safety organization Wake Up Safe and what it means to have one in Australia & New Zealand

Dealing with Emotionally Challenging Patient Encounter: Implementing ARCs Framework

In this 1-hour interactive small-group workshop, clinicians will be provided with a framework for responding to patient emotions and their own emotions in challenging patient encounters: The ARCS framework. Participants will work in pairs and small groups to practice using the ARCS framework to respond to patient/parent distress as well as their own distress in familiar (previously experienced) clinical encounters. Participants will learn from their peers and acquire skills that will help them  to manage stress, prevent burnout,  and build trusting and mutually supportive relationships with patients and parents.


Anaphylaxis (CPD)

This workshop will cover general knowledge and current best practice in the management of anaphylaxis in paediatric anaesthesia. It will include practical hands-on crisis and post-crisis management as well as follow-up.

ROTEM Masterclass

This workshop will look at the use of thromboelastogram (ROTEM) in paediatric surgery.  It will go through the basics of how the ROTEM works, what the different values mean and how they can be used in clinical scenarios such as trauma and cardiac surgery.  The SCH guideline and algorithm will be discussed, along with the process of how it was established.  The workshop will involve a brief didactic presentation and then a series of Problem Based Learning scenarios to help people improve their knowledge of ROTEM guided transfusion – the advantages, disadvantages and the pitfalls


Paediatric Resuscitation (CPD ANZCA)

This Emergency Response session is an opportunity to update and practise your resuscitation knowledge and skills. It is a hands-on workshop with stations covering - newborn resuscitation, neonatal airway management, vascular access (including IO), BLS and ALS.

EPIC Techniques for Peri-operative and Procedural comfort

This EPIC workshop is suitable for those that have already completed the EPIC One Day Course. We’ll focus on communicative and imaginative techniques for managing procedural care and acute pain in the peri-operative setting.
