EPIC is the SPANZA special interest group for SPANZA Members with an interest in reducing peri-procedural anxiety and distress.
EPIC is the Effective Peri-Procedural Communication interest group within SPANZA. EPIC aims to provide language, communication and imaginative techniques for every child, every time they have a medical procedure. The EPIC workshops teach these techniques to help health professionals engage with children and their families and enhance their ability to manage medical procedures.
The learning on the course is interactive and experiential. Background knowledge is provided prior to the course in an e-learning format which covers the basic principles and provides examples of techniques used. These techniques will then be taught experientially on the course. Access to the e-learning course will be opened 2 weeks prior to the workshops.
In the first session we’ll reinforce the GREAT LAURS - structured approach to communication and language techniques. In the second and third sessions we’ll learn techniques to manage anxiety and specific imaginative techniques to use during hospital procedures and in the peri-operative setting. Our goal is to provide useful understandings about communication which can assist with reducing a child's anxiety when facing procedural care, and simple practical skills you can begin to use at your next day caring for children.
The courses are for anaesthetists, surgeons, physicians, and other health professionals (nurses, social workers, play therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists) who work with children and are keen to expand their ability to provide effective empowering communication for procedural care.
Attendees should be interested in gaining information and skills to understand the importance of preventing and managing procedural anxiety.

The EPIC faculty provide their time on a voluntary basis. We therefore cannot support workshops throughout the year in other centres.
If you are interested in hosting an EPIC workshop in your centre we firstly suggest that at least a few team members join one of the advertised workshops to experience it first. These team members will then be asked to help support the workshop faculty.
If you have fulfilled the above, and are still interested in hosting a workshop, please contact the SPANZA Secretariat via secretariat@spanza.org.au with an idea of dates and numbers. We will ask for at least 6 months notice to be able to organise a workshop outside of a capital city and confirmation is subject to minimum numbers and faculty availability.
If you are unable to attend any of the advertised workshops above, please submit your details via the button below, to register your interest. As further workshops become available, we will let you know.
SPANZA welcomes the National Pediatric Hypnosis Training Institute (NPHTI) back to Australia and to NZ in November 2025.
NPHTI 3 day intensive workshop is world renowned, and the faculty visited Australia in November 2023, the 1st time they ever taught the workshop outside of the USA. Due to the long waitlists in 2023, SPANZA are hosting NPHTI once again in November 2025, to provide training in Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland.
Places are strictly limited and available for beginners with no experience.
Please visit www.nphti2025.au for full details and to register.
As many of the EPIC workshops are fully booked, and have waitlists, payment is required to confirm your spot on the workshop, and must be paid within 14 days of registration, or immediately, if booked less than 6 weeks prior to the date of the workshop.
If you need to cancel, terms are below:
